EAST HARTFORD, CT — BioSafe Systems is pleased to announce our partnership with Lidan Inc. of New York City, NY, to exclusively manufacture, market and distribute Guarda®, a new crop protection solution. Guarda is a liquid bactericide/fungicide that fits perfectly into BioSafe Systems’ line of over thirty sustainable products for agriculture and horticulture crop protection.

Lidan Inc. specializes in the research and development of biopharmaceuticals for use in healthcare and life sciences. Their extensive experience in product development provides a perfect platform for successful collaboration with BioSafe Systems. Guarda production begins at our Big Bend, GA facility in the next few weeks.

Guarda is the first US EPA-registered crop protection tool with botanical thyme oil as the active ingredient. Its unique formulation is standardized by its reactive component, thymol, which ensures the antimicrobial qualities of the thyme oil function consistently. The power of Guarda’s active ingredient is strengthened by the unique HOLDit polymer technology allowing it to remain active over a period of time providing efficient killing power against pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Without HOLDit, thyme oil is rendered inefficient because the thymol would volatize in the environment, never allowing for sufficient contact time to destroy microorganisms. The minimum risk, inert HOLDit technology safeguards the thyme oil from degrading over time to release the active ingredient, extending performance on crops without ANY restrictions or limitations.

Mode of Action

Guarda combats plant pathogens and provides continued defense through cellular damage and inhibition of these organisms. It is the first EPA-registered crop protection tool with thyme oil as the registered active ingredient, and it is formulated like no other, as the thyme oil is standardized by its active content, thymol. Guarda’s mode of action is cell wall destruction, telomerase inhibition, and cell membrane damage leading to loss of cytoplasmic content and ergosterol depletion.


The HOLDit® Advantage

The HOLDit Technology in Guarda captures the active ingredient, thyme oil, and allows it to remain active over a period of time extending performance against plant pathogenic organisms.

Without HOLDit, thyme oil is rendered inefficient because the active ingredient thymol volatilizes in the environment, never allowing for correct contact time to destroy microorganisms. This plant-based inert is tolerance exempt and approved for use without restrictions.

EAST HARTFORD, CT — The marketing team has gained a new Agriculture Brand Manager, Emily Barker of New Jersey. She majored in Public Relations at New Mexico State University and studied business management in Ohio. She joins BioSafe Systems after working for a decade with another sustainable company serving agricultural markets. She has many years of great experience developing and executing marketing plans for a diverse compilation of companies as a private consultant.

It is a huge undertaking to coordinate marketing across a country producing multitudes of crops in varying regions with unique pressures and challenges that fluctuate by season as well. BioSafe Systems believes in the power of our proprietary chemistry and the importance of our products to crop protection, water treatment and sanitation in agribusiness. We welcome Emily and look forward to her success with the marketing team.

Plant Pathology Team Keeps Growing with Sarah Budde Rodriguez, PhD

EAST HARTFORD, CT — Starting in January, BioSafe Systems will add another Assistant Plant Pathologist to our research and development team, Dr. Sarah Budde Rodriguez. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology with double minors in chemistry and biotechnology from North Dakota State University.

She continued her education as an undergraduate research assistant working specifically with potato pathogens. She attended graduate school at NDSU under the advisement of Dr. Neil Gudmestad, a University Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Plant Pathology. Sarah earned her PhD at the beginning of this year and holds a post-doctorate position analyzing adult plant resistance in dry bean rust at the same university where she began.

Plant pathology is one of the many integral components of BioSafe Systems because our study of plant-disease interactions serves as one of the foundation stones in how our products are developed and implemented in the field. Plant pathology includes a detailed understanding of plant anatomy, intricacies of disease-causing organisms, and complexities of environmental stresses, which are essential factors in optimizing plant health by best management or biotic and abiotic factors. Given the variables in optimum plant health and crop protection are numerous and broad, the combined talent on our research and development team will be strengthened with the addition of Dr. Sarah Budde Rodriguez’s knowledge and experience, as a vital component to our success.

Process Engineer Hired to Kick Off the New Year

EAST HARTFORD, CT — Daniel Ostas is coming on board BioSafe Systems as we start the new year. Daniel will be taking a position as a Process Engineer and working on testing controllers and chemical dosing modules for quality assurance and performance. He will also be occasionally visiting customers for on-site, chemical application planning, and auditing our chemical blending facilities across the US and other duties in programming, assembly and testing.

Daniel Ostas is a Connecticut local who attended the University of Toledo to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering. His previous experience is built on honing lean manufacturing techniques, utilizing root cause analysis to eliminate repeat problems, and driving company growth through safety, quality, and production initiatives.

Daniel’s extensive experience in specialty manufacturing fields will come in handy as BioSafe Systems launches three new products in 2021 and begins operations in a new facility in Yuma, Arizona. Daniel and all our process engineers will be busy streamlining production and assuring quality for our product users.

NEW PRODUCT LAUNCH: CalOx FT

EAST HARTFORD, CT — BioSafe Systems is excited to announce the launch of a new product, CalOx® FT, an advanced liquid nutritional and crop enhancement product for a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops. The unique, patented CaT™ technology in CalOx FT improves calcium mobility and distribution beyond traditionally applied calcium products to support better crop health.

Calcium is essential for plant health, but it primarily relies on water and the transpiration channel to move through the xylem. This method is inefficient and can result in calcium deficiencies in certain plant parts. BioSafe Systems addresses this vulnerability with CalOx FT by unlocking an alternate and more effective pathway for calcium to move within the plant. This optimizes plant health by delivering more uniform distribution, reducing calcium related disorders, and bolstering plant growth and development. The stronger the plant system, the longer its shelf life in storage, contributing to the lasting quality of yields.

Production Manager hired for new Yuma facility

EAST HARTFORD, CT — Miguel Gomez was hired as the production manager at BioSafe Systems’ new facility in Yuma, Arizona. Miguel lives in Arizona and will assist in establishing the Yuma facility as a thriving hub that offers maintenance, supply, service and distribution to our customers in the Southwest region. Miguel earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Instituto Technologico de Mexicali in Mexico. His 13 years of experience in maintenance and 14 years of experience in production equipped him to manage the new facility in Yuma. Plus, Miguel’s motivation and hands-on work ethic are matched and valued by BioSafe Systems. He is a great addition to the team.

The Yuma facility is an important acquisition for BioSafe Systems. It’s an opportunity for BioSafe Systems to further sustainability initiatives, including reducing carbon emissions by increasing local presence for service and delivery in the Southwest region.

A New Design Engineer to start with BioSafe Systems

EAST HARTFORD, CT — A new Design Engineer, Bill Clark, is joining us at the BioSafe Systems East Hartford headquarters starting in November. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering from Central Connecticut State University with a specific focus on CAD (computer-aided design). He also specialized in PLC programming and proved his comprehensive understanding of programmable logic controller (PLC) when he published a paper on the topic.

Bringing someone like Bill on is incredibly useful, especially with his knowledge of these popular and innovative engineering technologies. PLC is the program BioSafe Systems uses in its Smart Technology and OxyFusion dosing system. The programming allows our dosing mechanisms to monitor peroxyacetic acid (PAA) levels in wastewater, produce wash water, and in-field spray applications. The program allows users to adjust levels remotely and collect and store data for the most accessible transparency.

We’re looking forward to a productive future with Bill contributing his knowledge to BioSafe Systems’ engineering and technology pursuits. He stated, “I’m excited to be entering a job field more suited to my education and start a new career path with BioSafe Systems with their engineering team.”
