UMass WET Center Publishes New PAA Research with Journal of the New England Water Environment Association

East Hartford, CT— The Lake, Pond & Municipal division at BioSafe Systems has been working with the UMass Water and Energy Technology (WET) Center for the past year and a half to further the understanding of peroxyacetic acid (PAA) and its capabilities in wastewater treatment, especially the way it works in tandem with UV disinfection methods. Finally, we can share the research results.

The final stage of municipal wastewater treatment is “secondary effluent disinfection” and it follows cycles of physical, chemical, and biological processes. Our research determines how PAA performs at this stage as opposed to chlorine. The article details how varying PAA dosing rates, contact times, residuals, total coliforms (TC), and E. coli (EC) removal. BioSafe Systems’ OxyFusion® on-site generated PAA and BioSafe Systems’ Equilibrium PAA disinfectants proved effective for deactivating TC and EC in wastewater. Chlorine performs similarly but requires a higher dosing rate and longer contact time, but it also produces carcinogenic disinfection by-products that don’t occur with PAA.

UMass published the scientific paper in the Journal of New England Water Environment Association. It is the culmination of months of diligent, detailed work by Patrick Wittbold, Research Engineer, and Soon-Mi Kim, Ph.D. Candidate, and their team at UMass with support from BioSafe Systems’ Lead Chemical Engineer, Don Hobro, and our technical representatives for the Lake, Pond & Municipal division. The combined work of the UMass WET center and BioSafe Systems prove that progress is a team effort and the successful results of our research prove that PAA is not only effective in water disinfection and the on-site generation of non-acidic and odor-free PAA solutions are a game-changer.

New Service Technician for Southwest Region: Claudio Canedo

EAST HARTFORD, CT —Last month BioSafe Systems added another teammate. Claudio Canedo is our newest Service Technician who will be working in Arizona and further Southwest region. He will be providing service and customer support during field visits and managing all on-site installations, repairs, maintenance and test tasks.

Claudio is bringing our team his 28 years of experience working with ammonia refrigeration, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Claudio worked for 18 years at Fresh Express/B.C. Systems on the raw production side of facilities and cooling equipment. He says, “I’ve been working since I remember; I am a hard worker that is always willing to learn…This opportunity of joining BioSafe Systems is a blessing to my family and I, and I look forward to being a part of the team.”

Claudio has lived most of his life in the Yuma, Arizona, area and now passes time with his wife Imelda and playing soccer, football, and basketball with his children: Kelsey, Sebastian, Diego, and Emilio.

Tom Warmuth Honored by The Aquatic Plant Management Society with the 2020 Max McCowan Friendship Award

EAST HARTFORD, CT — BioSafe Systems is proud to congratulate Tom Warmuth, an LP&M Technical Representative, on receiving the Aquatic Plant Management Society’s annual Max McCowan Friendship Award. Can’t spell Warmuth without warmth—a key trait of any recipient of the Max McCowan Friendship Award. Tom Warmuth was presented with the award for 2020, and BioSafe Systems couldn’t agree more with him being honored this way.

Max McCowen was a dedicated member of the APMS since 1971 and served on the Board of Directors as President in 1985. In 1995, the Society established the award to be bestowed on worthy members in remembrance of Max. It is a special recognition given to an APMS member whose demeanor and actions display sincerity and friendship in the spirit of being an ambassador for the APMS. Criteria include warmth and outgoing friendship, sincerity and genuine concern, gracious hospitality, a positive attitude, and a smile.

Tom has been part of the Lake, Pond & Municipal water treatment team for BioSafe Systems for six years and is regarded as a knowledgeable, kind, funny, forthright coworker and friend.

“I suppose I’m a friendly guy, but it’s easy to be in the Lake and Water Management community, everyone is also friendly, and I do consider many of my colleagues to be friends. I am very honored to have been chosen to be listed among the previous recipients of this award,” said Tom Warmuth.

Plant Pathology Team Keeps Growing with Sarah Budde Rodriguez, PhD

EAST HARTFORD, CT — Starting in January, BioSafe Systems will add another Assistant Plant Pathologist to our research and development team, Dr. Sarah Budde Rodriguez. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology with double minors in chemistry and biotechnology from North Dakota State University.

She continued her education as an undergraduate research assistant working specifically with potato pathogens. She attended graduate school at NDSU under the advisement of Dr. Neil Gudmestad, a University Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Plant Pathology. Sarah earned her PhD at the beginning of this year and holds a post-doctorate position analyzing adult plant resistance in dry bean rust at the same university where she began.

Plant pathology is one of the many integral components of BioSafe Systems because our study of plant-disease interactions serves as one of the foundation stones in how our products are developed and implemented in the field. Plant pathology includes a detailed understanding of plant anatomy, intricacies of disease-causing organisms, and complexities of environmental stresses, which are essential factors in optimizing plant health by best management or biotic and abiotic factors. Given the variables in optimum plant health and crop protection are numerous and broad, the combined talent on our research and development team will be strengthened with the addition of Dr. Sarah Budde Rodriguez’s knowledge and experience, as a vital component to our success.

Process Engineer Hired to Kick Off the New Year

EAST HARTFORD, CT — Daniel Ostas is coming on board BioSafe Systems as we start the new year. Daniel will be taking a position as a Process Engineer and working on testing controllers and chemical dosing modules for quality assurance and performance. He will also be occasionally visiting customers for on-site, chemical application planning, and auditing our chemical blending facilities across the US and other duties in programming, assembly and testing.

Daniel Ostas is a Connecticut local who attended the University of Toledo to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering. His previous experience is built on honing lean manufacturing techniques, utilizing root cause analysis to eliminate repeat problems, and driving company growth through safety, quality, and production initiatives.

Daniel’s extensive experience in specialty manufacturing fields will come in handy as BioSafe Systems launches three new products in 2021 and begins operations in a new facility in Yuma, Arizona. Daniel and all our process engineers will be busy streamlining production and assuring quality for our product users.
