BioSafe Systems sent our (self proclaimed) dopest representative to the Metrolina trial gardens in Huntersville, North Carolina. Devin McCaffrey spent the day talking with industry partners, building new connections, and learning about plant genetics. Breeders experiment with mixing species’ traits for new variations in foliage like leaf shape, floral pattern, colors, and combinations.
The samples of new breeds are given to Metrolina Greenhouses to showcase, to take an inventory of public and industry opinion, and get feedback on the favorites for future growing seasons and potential market value. The operation built its 3-acre consumer trial garden in 2010, to provide a testing ground for more than 2,000 plant varieties each year. This ensures that Metrolina selects only the best-quality plants that consumers can grow easily and successfully (Home | Southern Garden Tour).
“These plant breeders work hard to create unique variations for the showcase. It’s BioSafe Systems’ goal to protect them by keeping pests and pathogens off the new breeds and maintain clean facilities.” – Devin McCaffrey
